The American Dental Association recommends that a dentist see a child as soon as his or her first tooth erupts.  Besides checking for tooth decay, Dr. Lipat and Dr. Hamel can demonstrate proper oral hygiene, discuss a well-balanced diet, evaluate any adverse habits such as thumb-sucking, and help your children maintain a lifelong healthy smile.  Our goal is for your child to leave our office smiling with an overall positive experience, giving them the confidence that the dentist is not out to harm them.

How to prepare your child for his/her first dental visit:

• Talk to your child at least a week before the appointment.
• Read them Just Going to the Dentist (Little Critter) and Berenstein Bears Visit the Dentist books.  These are great children’s books about the dentist and will help put them at ease.
• Allow them to bring their favorite stuffed animal, blanket, or toy that will comfort them.

How to prepare your child for treatment of cavity:

• Give your child honest and simple details of what to expect. 
• Tell your child how the dentist will put their tooth to sleep with “sleepy juice” and ask them to listen for their snoring tooth. 
• Tell them,  “The dentist uses a loud toothbrush that sounds like a whistle, they will use this to shake and rinse the sugar bugs out.”
• Explain to your child how lucky they are to have such a great and caring dentist that can fix their teeth.

What NOT to do:

• Do NOT use false pretenses to lure your child to the dentist.  This will create distrust between you and your child, and the child will think that they had to be tricked because the dentist is scary.
• Do NOT use scary words like “shot,” “needle,” “hurt,” “pain,” or “drill.”
