At-Home Whitening vs. In-Office Whitening with Zoom WhiteSpeed
One of the services we enjoy performing the most is teeth whitening, as we and our patients are often able to see very fast results — it’s one of the few times in life where you can often get “instant satisfaction”. In order to make whitening accessible to as many of our patients who would like it, we offer at-home and in-office (with Zoom) whitening options.
Over-the-Counter Teeth Whitening
Over-the-counter teeth whitening products are a nice introduction to whiter smiles, but have their limitations. Since they are over-the-counter, they use a much weaker whitening gel. Over-the-counter products also can be quite cumbersome as they are not custom-made to fit your teeth. This can allow the whitening gel to leak and may cause gum irritation and a less effective treatment. As such, over-the-counter whitening products can take several weeks or even months to get the results you are after.
Professional Teeth Whitening
Professional strength whitening agents that are used under the direct supervision of a dental professional can give you dramatic results in as little as one visit to the office. At Oak Tree Dental, our patients can choose to receive an in-office whitening treatment and/or custom-made, take-home whitening trays.
Our in-office teeth whitening treatment involves the latest Philips Zoom! Whitespeed technology that uses a combination of whitening gel and a high intensity LED light that work together to break-up and remove stains and discolorations from your teeth. This in-office procedure is combined with custom-made, take-home whitening trays that are made to fit your teeth keeping the whitening gel on your teeth and off your gums. This will allow you to continue whitening at home for future “touch-ups.”
This process involves wearing custom-made whitening trays that look like a thin, transparent athletic mouth guard. Impressions of your teeth will be taken and we will make custom-fitted trays that fit you and only you! This is why professional take-home whitening treatments are more effective than over-the-counter treatments; leakage of the whitening gel is minimal (if any) thereby offering greater effectiveness with less gum irritation. Your take-home whitening kit will allow you to whiten your teeth at your convenience. It is safe, effective and customized for you!
Frequently Asked Questions
How does Zoom! Whitening work?
The Zoom! Whitening gel’s active ingredient is hydrogen peroxide. As the hydrogen peroxide is broken down, oxygen enters the enamel and dentin, breaking-up and removing stains and discolorations from your teeth, leaving the structure of the tooth unchanged. The Zoom! Whitespeed LED lamp aids in activating the hydrogen peroxide and helps it penetrate the surface of the tooth.
What causes tooth discoloration?
There are many causes of tooth discoloration. The most common include aging and consumption of staining substances such as coffee, tea, colas, tobacco, red wine, etc. During tooth formation, consumption of tetracycline, certain antibiotics, or excessive fluoride may also cause tooth discoloration.
How long do the results last?
By following some simple post-whitening care instructions, teeth that have been whitened with the Zoom! Whitespeed System can remain whiter for years. To keep teeth looking their best, we recommend flossing, brushing twice daily, avoiding stain-causing foods/drinks, and occasional maintenance or “touchups” with Take-home Whitening treatment (included with the Zoom! Whitening in-office treatment).
Is teeth whitening safe?
Yes. Extensive research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth under the supervision of a dentist is safe.
